Month Two

Next, we encourage you to move on to two “GOING DEEPER” sections. Each section has three differently-themed options from which to choose. Each theme is paired with a core question that will help strengthen your family’s conversations about race and racism. We hope you adopt these questions as part of your continuing family dialog.

Your task this month is to pick ONE of the questions and related resource kits below:

An opportunity to:

  • think about difference and sameness as it relates to our own experiences and environments
  • develop a dialogue about whom we see in our daily lives and who we don’t
  • take time to notice what has become automatic and how that shapes what may seem “normal”
  • analyze our own “normal” as it relates to space, place, media, entertainment, and news

An opportunity to:

  • (re)claim lost, unrealized, unrecognized history as it pertains to the Civil Rights Era
  • integrate missing histories into your family’s common awareness
  • connect themes from the Civil Rights Era to patterns we see today

An opportunity to:

  • Embrace both the promise and the pain of America and American history
  • Consider how many ways there have been to “become American”
  • Reflect on which stories we commonly hear and which ones we often miss

We encourage you to focus on one theme at a time, but once you are done please continue to explore other themes as much as you'd like. If you focus on one theme a month, there is nearly a year of content available here, with more being added often.
